My computer is slow!

Has your computer gone from performing like a Corvette to being more like the family station wagon at rush hour? Are you waiting forever for applications to load?

There are a variety of common reasons that computers slow down over time. Even though standard computer use can cause a loss of performance, you don’t need to throw out your old PC. There are steps you can take to get it revvin’ again!

  1. Regularly use a registry cleaner. A key part of your PC is the Windows Registry. It keeps track of a variety of information, including preferences and settings. With regular use the registry can expand quickly in size and become unstable. Useless registry keys can be left behind by uninstalled programs and clog up the registry. As well, registry files can be corrupted. Registry cleaners can find and automatically fix errors that plague your computer.

  2. Run anti-virus or anti-spyware software. Anytime you use the Internet or your email you are at risk of being infected by viruses, spyware, adware, keyloggers, Trojans or other malware. These programs can attempt to steal personal information, spy on you or hurt your PC. Even if their task is not particularly damaging, malware programs are often badly written and can interfere with your computer’s regular functioning.

  3. Defrag your drive. A hard drive full of fragmented files can reduce your computer’s overall speed as it needs to search for them all. It is a good idea to use the built-in Disk Defragmenter about once a month.

  4. Remove unneeded programs. Various applications can take up a lot of space on your PC. If you no longer need them or if you have chosen to let the license keys expire it is best to uninstall them. In general, it is a good idea to clean your computer by deleting files that you are sure you no longer need. Be sure to empty the Recycle Bin to make sure that they are gone and no longer taking up space.

  5. Keep your drivers updated. Hardware device and software drivers help your operating system, hardware and software speak to each other. Old drivers can become corrupt, while updated versions can help keep things running smoothly. You can try to update your drivers manually or take advantage of innovative software that helps you keep tabs on which new versions have been released.

You do not need to put up with slow performance from your PC.
By being proactive and doing regular maintenance you can keep it purring like a sports car!
