Top five modem errors
Although you do not hear about them as much anymore, dial-up modems are still part of our computing lives. Some users take advantage of them for dialing into servers, faxing and even connecting to the Net in rural areas where high-speed Internet is just a myth. In any case, dial-up modems can still experience a variety of errors.
There are many different types of modem errors. However, the most common kinds are:
- Error 680 – No dial tone. It may seem simple, but if you have a dial-up modem, it is important to make sure that your phone line is connected. As well, it is good to actually check the physical connections to make sure someone didn’t kick something loose by accident. In other cases a quick PC reboot will have you back up and running.
- Error 600 – An operation is pending. Is another program trying to use the modem? Check this first and then try restarting. Some spyware, such as dialers, can try to use your modem. Try scanning with anti-spyware software to see if this is the case.
- Error 602 – The port is already open. This means that something else is already using the modem. You can try to stop what is currently using the modem yourself or go the “Task Manager” and terminate the “rnaapp.” This should disconnect the current connection.
- Error 610 – The buffer is invalid. You might need to increase the modem speed. This can be done by going to the “Control Panel” and selecting the “Modem” icon. Check the port speed and consider increasing it.
- Error 677 – Someone answered the phone! Sounds silly, but recheck your number. If it is right, you probably need to call the person and let them know what you are doing and that they need to let the machine get it.
These suggestions should help you combat the common modem errors.
