What is CHKDSK?
CHKDSK, which is short for Checkdisk, is a handy utility that operates on DOS OS/2 and Microsoft Windows operating systems. You can use this command to display the integrity of the file system of both hard disks and floppy disks. CHKDSK can also fix some file system errors.
While CHKDSK is very helpful, you might also encounter errors with it. In the last few years, a common error has arisen with iTunes. The error message states “The file or directory \ipod_control\itunes\itunesDB is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the CHKDSK utility.”
At other times, things can get a little wonky with CHKDSK on a reboot. You might see a message stating "Cannot open volume for direct access.” This might occur on startup due to a firewall or an anti-virus or anti-spyware application locking a partition before CHKDSK can scan it. This situation was much improved with the release of Windows XP Service Pack 2.
